Wind Power Lights Lady Liberty

Did you know that the Statue of Liberty now receives 100 percent of its electricity from wind power? The U.S. National Park Service is purchasing 27 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of wind power to cover the electricity needs for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island museum over a period of three years. The energy will come from wind turbines in West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The Statue of Liberty won’t be directly hooked up to the windmills. Instead, the General Services Administration, which manages energy purchases for the facility, is purchasing renewable energy credits from its electricity provider. The electricity produced by the wind turbines will offset the same amount the Ellis Island facility uses, enough to power 1,000 homes for a year.
